Frequent Questions

Who We Are

Habitat Goldsboro-Wayne is proud of who we are and what we do. We've tried to answer your basic questions here, but if you have more, please don't hesitate to contact us!

  • What does Habitat for Humanity do?

Habitat for Humanity gives families, couples and individuals in need of housing the opportunity of affordable homeownership. Habitat does NOT give homes away.

  • Are Habitat houses free?

No! In addition to the hundreds of hours of sweat equity that homeowners put into the building of their homes, homes are purchased at affordable monthly mortgages at zero- to very low-percent interest rates.

  • How are homeowners selected?

Families, couples or individuals in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates.

For home ownership, families must live or work in Wayne County, have a housing need, fall within our income guidelines and have the ability to pay and be willing to partner and perform the required sweat equity.

For home repair, families must own and be living in the home as their primary residence, fall within our income guidelines and have the ability to pay, and be willing to partner with us.

The Family Services Committee assesses each home ownership applicant’s level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay a low-interest mortgage loan. The staff selects repair applicants based on ability to pay and partner and our ability to perform the repairs needed.

Neither race, gender, sexual identity, religion nor family status is a factor in choosing who Habitat works with .

  • How can I get involved?

Habitat is funded entirely by donations and staffed largely with volunteers. We are always in need of individuals willing to pitch in to help a neighbor in need. Visit our How You Can Help section to find out ways to donate or volunteer.

  • Absolutely! Habitat has many opportunities to volunteer other than on a construction site. We need volunteers to help run our ReStore, as well as volunteers to help with administrative and fundraising efforts in our office. We also are always on the lookout for folks who can provide meals from time to time on our construction sites, and perhaps most importantly, folks who are able to serve on one of our committees, particularly Family Services.

  • All contributions are used where most needed to support the efforts to provide qualified families with the opportunity of affordable homeownership. But for an idea of what your donation might pay for on a job site, check out our donation page.

  • Our organization takes our privacy policy seriously and takes steps to protect and ensure the safety of our supporters. We do not sell or otherwise disclose information about our volunteers or supporters outside of our immediate organization. This policy has no exceptions. We do not sell or exchange your information with any other organizations, public, private or nonprofit. For more detailed information visit our Privacy Policy page.
